What you can expect from Cfcsj?

The Center's approach, Context-Centered Family Systems Therapy will be incorporated into all training.  The Center's commitment to Social Justice includes consideration of disparities of power related to gender; socio-economic class, sexual orientation, culture, race and other phenomena related to discrimination, structural oppression and marginalization.

Effective Engagement & Treatment with Families When a Child or Teen is Referred Individually:

Clinical skills development will address how to:
 
  • Move from a referral for individual child or adolescent therapy to family treatment
  • Develop a clinical relational hypothesis that includes family without minimizing the child's problems
  • Understand the specific skills of strength-based interviewing geared toward individual and family empowerment
  • Adapt clinical empirical data to create developmentally focused tasks within the session and/or as a "take home assignment"

A Systemic Approach to Working with Families with Children & Adolescents with Problems at School:

 Clinical skills development will address how to:
 
  • Engage families as partners in a collaborative dynamic assessment of the school problem, its relationship to the family, to history and to the school context
  • De-pathologize behaviors without minimizing their seriousness
  • Systemize Collaborative Family School Collaboration Approach

Trauma & Child/Adolescent Brain Development:  Healing through Relationships:

Participants will learn about:
 
  • The intersection of biology, social contexts and personal experiences in the development of the brain
  • Trauma informed care through individual & family therapy
  • Changing relationships to affect feelings, experience & cognition stories that can heal

 

 

From Pathology to Narratives of Empowerment:  How to Intervene Using a Strength-based Resilience Oriented Approach with Individuals, Families & Groups:

 

Clinical skills development will address how to:
 
  • Implement an empowerment-based clinical engagement, engaging a strength-based, culturally competent approach to engage reluctant clients
  • Focus on strengths without minimizing the seriousness of challenges in individuals, families and systems
  • Reveal hidden trauma, as well as narratives, of survival by utilizing stories that can heal
